Adapted from Gourmet and featured beautifully on the Tart Tart, I've found I'm holding steadfast to late summer like drinks.  Sometimes when your in a cozy bar and have a uber talented mixologist on hand, it's hard to stray from these fresh, vibrant type wonders. Plus I think they make you feel better that you're drinking something that has healthy ingredients, no?  Never mind the vodka, it has blueberries and basil in it.  But when you are not in the cozy bar and are still craving something just as delicious, this Blueberry Basil Vodka Gimlet will do the trick. Enjoy!

BLUEBERRY BASIL VODKA GIMLET
 
 | ingredients | 
4 parts blueberry basil syrup
3 parts vodka
3 parts fresh squeezed lemon juice
seltzer water to top off individual glasses

blueberry basil syrup
2 cups water
1 cup sugar
zest from one lemon
1 pint blueberries
2 cups packed fresh basil sprigs
 | directions |
in a medium saucepan
stir together all the ingredients
over medium heat until the sugar melts
bring the mixture to a boil
reduce the heat and
simmer until slightly thickened

strain the contents into a bowl
pressing hard against the sieve
then discard the solids
after it is cooled
cover the syrup and store in the 
refrigerator until cold

I have to say I was pretty inspired by your mixologist husband. Instead of feeling sorry for myself, I'm going to give it a go...But yes, wish I could hop on over to Chicago and enjoy a round or two with you guys :)
